Collateral,2004,Directed by Michael Mann
Collateral has a really sneaky opening scene showing the audience a little glimpse of every character, making everyone seem interesting but not giving anything away.

There is hardly any dialogue in the opening scene accept from Jason Statham apologising to one of the main characters in the film for bumping into him, and gives him a warm welcome. Then the camera is focused on a cab driver cleaning his cab to perfection. While he is cleaning his cab the cab driver positions a picture of an Tropical Island, this could symbolise he American dream, because the driver wants to retire and live in a place like that.
There are quite a few camera shots. A few examples may be : Long shots, Close up, Low shot, pan. These are just a few techniques used throughout the scene. There were also a few editing techniques used like cuts and fades. The Mice-en-scene, fitted perfectly because the location the sequence was filmed was at an train station, and if it was remade in a film studio the effect probably wouldn’t be as good.
In the opening scene there was a use of ‘Foley’, this is when Jason Statham bumped into the hit man and the briefcase dropped to the ground. The dropping of the briefcase was then re-created in a studio with special microphone picking up every sound mad in the recording room.
My final conclusion of the opening sequence is, the opening sequence is really good because they introduced each main character without giving to much away.
